Deep ruby red in colour, it has a delicious wild berry perfume, with flavour of raisins. The grapes Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Sangiovese from the Palazzo della Torre vineyard follow two different paths: 70 % of the grapes are vinified immediately after the harvest, the remaining percentage is dried until the end of December. At this point, the wine ferments again with the dried grapes.

Tasting notes: This sweet wine, deep ruby red in colour, has a spicy bouquet with hints of dried fruit and is full and velvety on the palate. It shares with Amarone the technique of 'appassimento', the natural drying of the grapes Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Molinara, yet it differs in that the fermentation process is interrupted before all the grape sugar can change into alcohol. This extraordinarily concentrated wine is named after the founder of the estate, Giovanni Allegrini, who chose it as his favourite.
Traditionally this wine is enjoyed with dry desserts, such as shortbread, cantucci (dry almond biscuits), sbrisolona (local crumb cake) but it is also ideal with strawberries and tropical fruits. Thanks to its outstanding roundness, it makes a perfect partner for some cheeses, especially a mild Gorgonzola. |

Tasting notes: This wine is made from 85% Chardonnay and 15% Grechetto grapes from vines planted at Antinori's Castello della Sala in Umbria, at elevations ranging between 200 and 400 metres. The varieties are vinified separately and the musts remain in contact with the skins for about 8 hours at 10°c to maximise the wine's aromas. Fermentation is in French oak barriques, and the wine then remains on the lees in the barriques for about 5 months, during which time it completes its malolactic fermentation. It then spends a further 10 months in the bottle in the historic cellars of Castello della Sala before being released.
The result is a complex array of aromas of citrus, pineapple and pears blending with vanilla from the oak used for ageing. Excellent and unspoilt varietal character. Well-structured palate with a long, satisfying finish. |

Tasting notes: The original Super-Tuscan, Tignanello is produced exclusively from the Tignanello vineyard, a 47 hectares (116 acres) southwest-facing, calcareous rocky-marl and limestone soil plot planted between 1,150 and 1,312 feet above sea level at Antinori's Santa Cristina Estate. It was the first Sangiovese to be aged in small oak barrels, the first red wine from the region in modern times to use a non-traditional grape variety, Cabernet, in the blend, and among the first red wines made in Chianti with no white grapes. In all three instances, it set the example for a new breed of exceptional top-of-the-line Italian wine, and established the rule in Tuscany for breaking the rules, which has been widely emulated.
The blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc gives Tignanello 2006 a full, rich and round rich palate, dense without hiding its great elegance and complexity. A powerful yet fine wine, with good length and a chocolate/citrus aftertaste. The tannins are present, but smooth and silky, which, together with balanced acidity, assures Tignanello 2006 good ageing potential. |

Tasting notes: The grapes for the Rufina were grown in various vineyards covering 40 hectares on this ancient estate situated in the Chianti Rufina DOCG zone, north east of Florence. At an altitude of up to 200 metres above sea level, most of the vineyards face west/north west with soils formed of clay and limestone. The older vines (31 years old) are planted at a density of 3,200 per hectare with 5,200 per hectare for the younger 7 year old vines resulting in an average yield of between 35 and 40 hl per hectare.
The outstanding 2006 is one to be cherished, very pure, very classic and complex for the price.

Tasting notes: A stunning sweet wine from the Island of Pantelleria closer to the North African coast than that of Sicily. The grapes come from 11 different areas of the island having unique micro-climates that determine different times of maturity. After August 15, harvesting begins by picking the grapes that will be left to dry naturally by the sun and the wind for 20-30 days. In September, the less precocious vineyards are harvested. The fresh grapes are cooled to preserve their aromas and then soft-pressed to obtain the must. During the course of fermentation, the dried grapes, that have been de-stemmed by hand, are added several times. The phase of maceration of the dried grape in the must is delicate and essential to obtain the extraordinary qualities of persuasive sweetness, freshness and special aroma. The wine then ages in stainless steel tanks for at least 4 months and 6 months in the bottle.
The wine displays its extraordinary personality and depth initially with its bright amber yellow colour. After the first, intense notes of apricots and peaches, the bouquet offers sweet sensations of dried figs, honey, herbs and mineral notes. The wine is impressive on the palate with its outstanding complexity due to a fusing of sweetness, acidity and softness.

“A limpid purple garnet core. The nose is quintessential Fonseca, like a riotous party reaching its crescendo in the glass. Macerated black cherries, eau-de-vie, damson, fig and a touch of Seville orange. Then what is fascinating is that the uproar dies down with aeration, becomes more focused...as if the host has asked everyone to quieten down. The palate is powerful and spicy on the entry, sweet ripe black berried fruits, a touch of spice, fig and apricot, lovely cohesion and weight building towards a deeply joyous finish that lacquers the mouth in port-like reverie. Perhaps more approachable than the 2000 or the 2003 at this stage, this is a marvellous Fonseca.”

Tasting notes: With the exception of a few especially cold days in February and March that delayed budbreak by a few days, 2005 began with a fairly mild winter followed by a spring that was warm and sunny from the outset. Because of this the vines flowered a week early, about May 20th for the precocious varietals. Vegetative vigour and production potentials were perfectly balanced from the beginning. The amount of bunch thinning required was therefore average for the season. June and July both did their duty: Heat, sun, just a little rain... Perfect conditions for the veraison to occur uniformly. Finally, during August the grapes ripened steadily, with constant temperatures that never exceeded the seasonal average (32 C). A few rainfalls in mid-month contributed to the optimal development of the bunches.
"The medium-bodied 2005 Ornellaia shows plenty of delineation in its dark cherries, blueberries, spices, minerals and crushed rocks. The 2005 doesn’t have the detail of the 2004 or the richness of the 2006, but it does offer notable finesse and clarity in an understated style for this wine. My impression is that this will be a relatively early-maturing vintage of Ornellaia, which is not a bad thing, considering the age-worthiness of the two vintages which surround it" 93pts Parker
