Allegrini

This family company, run by winemaker Franco and his sister Marilisa, leads the modernist brigade in Valpolicella, and are edging back towards larger barrels and less oak. The wines are characterised by excellent fruit, balance, depth and intensity, using varietal combinations which in many cases buck the established trend.

Tasting notes: Dark and smoky, with a dab of charcoal along with prune, chocolate and herbs on the nose. On the palate a sleek compote of baked cherries and plums. Very well made, with chewy richness.

Tasting notes: Franco abandoned the DOC for dense, concentrated La Grola in 1997 because he din't want to use Molinara grapes. This is mainly Corvina with a chunk of Rondinella, plus a sprinkling of Sangiovese and Syrah.

Heady aromas of black cherry liqueur, smoke, roasted meats, liqorice, and espresso...seriously endowed, medium to full-bodied, ripe, textured, well-made Italian red.

Tasting notes: The Palazzo is a Ripasso-style wine from Corvina and Rondinella, but enriched with dried grapes, rather than Amarone lees. Densely packed on the nose, with currants, flowers, mineral and oak. Medium- to full-bodied, with spicy dried fruit flavours, firm tannins and a long, minerally finish.
