Bordeaux

Bordeaux, the single biggest fine wine region in the world, produces around 750 million bottles of wine per year. Only around 5% of this wine is from the great chateaux and a great deal of the rest can be pretty unpalatable! However there are a growing number of young vignerons, often located in currently unfashionable appellations such as Lalande de Pomerol, that are producing fantastic wines which are well worth seeking out. After rigorous tasting we were won over by a concise group of them, and these form our everyday Bordeaux section aiming to provide excellent value and consistency from a region where value is not often at the forefront.

Our selection of wines from Bordeaux

Producer: Chateau Lynch-Moussas
Wine: Chateau Lynch Moussas 2000
Appellation: Pauillac
Region: Bordeaux Country: France
Grape: Bordeaux Blend
Tasting notes: Probably the best effort I have tasted from Lynch-Moussas ... in my career! Deep ruby/purple, with a sweet nose of creme de cassis intermixed with licorice, dried herbs, and vanilla, the wine is rich in fruit, has good glycerin, silky tannin, and a nice, spicy, layered finish. This will certainly have broad appeal, and it is good to see this property turn out something this interesting.

Producer: Chateau Malescot St-Exupery
Wine: Chateau Malescot St Exupery 2000
Appellation: Margaux
Region: Bordeaux Country: France
Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot
Tasting notes: This estate, which has continued to impress me in recent years, hit a home run in 2000. Showing slightly better than I rated it previously, this wine is deep bluish/purple with some lightening at the edge, and its floral nose displays notes of melted licorice, crushed rock, blueberries and black raspberries. A wine of extraordinary balance, equilibrium, and purity, with supple tannins, this medium to full-bodied, concentrated effort is already compelling and has hit its window of full maturity, where it should stay for another 15-20 years. 95/100 pts Robert Parker

Region: Bordeaux Country: France
Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot
Tasting notes: Fine deep colour, finely concentrated blackcurrant nose, good length and very fine expression
of fruit with potential complexity and fine tannins. A very good wine and one of the rare wines in
this line-up with breeding and class.

Producer: Chateau Sociando Mallet
Wine: Chateau Sociando Mallet 2004
Region: Bordeaux Country: France
Grape: Bordeaux Blend
Tasting notes: Sociando Mallet’s big, extracted, rich, classic 2004 boasts a deep ruby/purple hue as well as aromas of charcoal, wet stones, cold steel, and abundant black currant and cassis fruit. This medium to full-bodied, structured, powerful wine will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring. It should last for two decades.

Producer: Chateau Talbot
Wine: Chateau Talbot 1995
Appellation: St Julien
Region: Bordeaux Country: France
Grape: Bordeaux Blend
Tasting notes: This wine has turned out to be more impressive from bottle than it was in cask. It is a charming, intensely-scented wine with a tell-tale olive, earth, grilled beef, and black currant-scented bouquet soaring from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, with low acidity, and round, luscious, richly fruity flavors, this is a meaty, fleshy, delicious Talbot that can be drunk now.

Producer: Chateau Tournefeuille
Wine: Chateau Tournefeuille Lalande de Pomerol 2007
Appellation: Pomerol
Region: Bordeaux Country: France
Grape: Bordeaux Blend
Tasting notes: This is a youthful, bright claret with a touch of cedary spice from its subtle oak aging and voluptuous cassis and dark cherry fruit flavors. It is a smooth style Pomerol-esque effort that offers a brilliant value drop for a little extra sparkle this Christmas.
