Bruichladdich

On the remote Atlantic Isle of Islay a small, privately-owned Scottish distillery produces artisanal Single Malt Whisky as it was in 1881.

Here, the islanders’ art of distilling is still connected to its agricultural roots, with organic and heritage barleys grown on selected farms for ultimate individuality. Microchip-free distilling in tall narrow-necked stills followed by island maturation and natural bottling produces a spirit acknowledged as the purest in Scotland. This sophisticated, complex, multi-layered whisky is uniquely Islay-bottled to maximise the creamy texture and long finish - the ideal wine-drinker’s dram.

Tasting notes: In contrast to heavily-peated Port Charlotte and the mighty peat of Octomore, Bruichladdich itself retains the traditional, minimal peat level of 3-5 ppm. However, casks for this first bottling alone were surprisingly selected from a small, one-off distillation of lightly-peated barley, at an experimental 10 ppm.

The whisky, a pale gold colour after maturing in premium quality American oak, was naturally bottled, with out chill-filtration and colouring-free, on Islay.

MD Mark Reynier says, “Our progressive outlook is inextricably linked to our Hebridean heritage - which means Bruichladdich will always stand out from the crowd.

“2001 is a Spirit Odyssey, an exciting journey into the new millennium.”

Tasting notes: "A Single Malt Out of The Black Art of Alchemy

al-kimia was an ancient, mysterious and secretive Arabic philosophy. It involved the search for ultimate wisdom, immortality and using the water of life and philosopher’s stone.

Our own alchemist, Jim McEwan, was similarly tasked to use his own extensive skills to produce an ultimate nightcap dram; a brooding, complex and bewitching Bruichladdich. Using the 1989 vintage, the bottling was created from an exceptionally wide variety of cask types and oak origins, precisely what he won’t say. It’s his secret. And he ain’t telling."

Tasting notes: Medium weight and well defined for a young Islander. The texture is rich, sweet and mellow and the viscosity of the Sauternes brings balance to the power of the peat. A most sophisticated Octomore - it’s kind of unbelievable to see “The Beast” tamed a little!
