Bruno Rocca

Bruno Rocca is at the forefront of quality production of Italy’s legendary Barbaresco. In fact he is credited with creating softer, more readily drinkable Barbaresco in a style that can compete with Barolo. He took over a small seven hectare farm in 1978. Most of his property is situated in the famous vineyard called Rabajà (rah-bye-ya) in the town of Barbaresco.

Wines from Bruno Rocca

Producer: Bruno Rocca
Wine: Bruno Rocca Barbaresco 2006
Region: Piemonte Country: Italy
Grape: Nebbiolo
Tasting notes: Rocca’s 2004 Barbaresco normale, or “classico” as he calls it, is a lovely introduction to the vintage. It is a beautiful wine, medium ruby in color, with expressive, floral aromatics, plenty of fruit, well-integrated oak and excellent length as well as freshness.

Wine: Bruno Rocca Barbaresco 2008
Region: Piemonte Country: Italy
Grape: Nebbiolo
Tasting notes: The 2008 Barbaresco wafts on the palate with layers of perfumed dark cherries, tobacco, incense and spices. There is an exotic quality to the fruit that is quite striking in this vintage. The 2008 is a mid-weight, delicate Barbaresco from Bruno Rocca that is probably best suited to near-term drinking. That shouldn’t be too much of an issue, as the wine is fabulous right now.

Wine: Bruno Rocca Barbaresco Rabaja 2007
Region: Piemonte Country: Italy
Grape: Nebbiolo
Tasting notes: The 2007 Barbaresco Rabaja bursts from the glass with layers of tar, smoke, minerals, menthol, pine and Christmas cake that are wrapped around a core of intense black fruit. This is one of the more muscular, brooding wines readers will come across in 2007. The oak is beautifully integrated in this large scaled, sweeping Barbaresco. The Rabaja will be even better in a few years’ time, but I can hardly fault readers who don’t want to delay gratification, as this is a delicious bottle.

Wine: Bruno Rocca Barbera d' Alba 2007
Region: Piemonte Country: Italy
Grape: Barbera
Tasting notes: 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Nov/Dec 09

"Good deep ruby-red. Black cherry, blackberry, violet and dusty brown spices on the nose, with a hint of reduction. Sweet and deep but with real barbera sap and energy: nothing overdone about this 2007. There's a cool medicinal reserve to the ripe red and black fruit flavors. Finishes long and elegant. This was aged entirely in used barriques."
