The Cote de Nuits starts at Marsanny just south of Dijon and goes down to Corgolin. It is a narrow hill, often only a few hundred meters wide, with vineyards interspersed by woods and rocks. It contains 29 Appellations such as Gevry Chambertin and produces some of the best red Burgundies. A more general appellation is Cote de Nuits Villages. This is for mainly red wines from smaller villages around the Côte including those to the north, Fixin and Brochon and those to the south, Comblanchien, Corgoloin and Prissey. The wines from the north of the appellation tend to be fruitier and fuller bodied than those from the south that have a degree more sophistication. In general they will both be medium to full bodied.
Tasting notes: In January 1998, Nicolas began to purchase fruit and post-fermentation lots of wine from prestigious domaines. His own relationships with growers and the legacy of his father helped open doors to some of the greatest domaines, even those who normally sell little or nothing except under their own label. As early as 2000, Clive Coates MW was writing that Nicolas "was already a super-star".
