Domaine Chatelain

The Chatelain family have been growing vines on the slopes around Pouilly-sur-Loire since 1630.

André Chatelain, who died in 2005, was amongst the first producers in Pouilly-sur-Loire to export his wines, so starting the process of building their international reputation.

Jean-Claude and Genevière Chatelain now run the family estate. They have now been joined by their son, Vincent, and by Vincent Vatan, their son-in-law. The two Vincents are the 12th generation of vignerons at Domaine Chatelain.

Today they have 30 hectares of vines in Pouilly-Fumé spread across six of the seven communes of the appellation:

* Tracy-sur-Loire
* Pouilly-sur-Loire
* Mesves-sur-Loire
* Saint-Andelain
* Saint-Laurent l'Abbaye
* Saint-Martin-sur-Nohain

This means that their grapes come from all the different types of soils found around Pouilly. This gives them a great deal of freedom when putting their blends together, so that their wines are balanced and very typical of the appellation. Also they spread the risk of being hit by bad weather, especially frost or hail.
