Greywacke

Greywacke is the exciting new solo venture of Kevin Judd, who was chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay for 25 vintages and instrumental in the international recognition which New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc enjoys today.

The debut wine under the Greywacke label is the 2009 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, which displays the hallmarks of Kevin’s famed style: ripe fruit, fine balance, great concentration and superb varietal intensity. The grapes are primarily sourced from prime, low yielding vineyard sites in and around Marlborough’s Southern (Brancott and Ben Morven) Valleys, and vinified using ‘non-interventionist’ techniques.

The ‘Greywacke’ name derives from the greywacke rock which is prevalent in New Zealand and consists of layers of hard grey sandstone alternating with thinner layers of darker mudstone.

Wine: Greywacke Pinot Noir 2010
Region: Marlborough Country: New Zealand
Grape: Pinot Noir
Tasting notes: An intensely fragrant Marlborough pinot – full of juicy black cherries and the sweet scent of homemade strawberry jam, intermingled with more savoury suggestions of smoked meats and a hint of sarsaparilla. The firm but finely structured palate blends red and black fruits with chary, smoky oak and rich licorice. This is a deliciously aromatic wine with concentrated varietal character.

Wine: Greywacke Wild Sauvignon 2010
Region: Marlborough Country: New Zealand
Grape: Sauvignon Blanc
Tasting notes: Fermented entirely with naturally occurring yeast – this is an alternative style of sauvignon blanc that is both intricate and textural. An intriguing fusion of homemade apricot jam and lime marmalade is layered with dried tarragon and a doughy, flinty complexity. The palate is loaded with succulent fruit, pithy citrus rind and laced with minerality – a ‘wild child’ sauvignon with weight and persistence that finishes crisply, with a grapefruit twist.
