Herdade Grande

Herdade Grande operates in the classic Alentejan way of mixed agriculture, combining vines with olive trees, cereals, cattle and sheep. The estate has been in Antonio Lanca's family for almost a century, and recent investment in the winery is being rewarded with excellent results. Antonio takes the refreshing approach that his everyday wines are just as important as his lauded premium offerings, as they provide the cashflow to enable him to dabble in the top wines that continually wow the critics.

Tasting notes: Made from Antao Vas and Arinto, indigenous Alentejan white grapes, and part matured in new oak for just 3 months. Antao Vas in particular is a grape that responds very well to a little oak as its fresh pineapple character is softened by a hint of vanilla.

This is quite a complex wine, with pleasing weight, and fresh lime and pineapple flavours entwined with peppery and nutty flavours and a fine lingering finish. Perfect for a summer chicken salad.

Tasting notes: This little gem is a blend of two indigenous Portuguese grapes, Roupeiro and Antao Vaz. Medium straw in color; chalk, mineral and bee’s wax play as prominent a role in the wine’s personality as the grapefruit, lemon and lime flavors and aromas. Medium full-bodied and fairly rich, with good depth, cut and length, it offers great value.

Tasting notes: This is an admirably fruity wine made from the indigenous varieties Aragonez, Tincadeira and Alicante Bouschet. The soft ripeness of the Aragonez is complemented by the fragrance of Trincadeira, and the edges softened by a short maturation in second use barrels. Great everyday stuff and a brilliant alternative to new world BBQ accompaniments!

Tasting notes: The 2007 Reserva is a blend of Syrah and Touriga Nacional. This wine is only made in the best vintages, and with the best fruit from the vintage, so the components change over time.

Superb fruit intensity and beautifully fine, integrated tannins characterise this exceptional wine. The defined minerality keeps the wine fresh, while 10 months in new oak has helped to add a mocha complexity.

Tasting notes: Predominantly Aragonez, Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet, this wine also has a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon completing the blend. Powerful and dense berry fruits combine with good integrated oak characters from 6 months spent in barrel. Meaty tannins will ensure that this continues to develop further in bottle.
