Morey St Denis is relatively small, only a kilometre from north to south, squeezed in between Gevry Chambertin and Chambolle Musigny. It has 4 grand crus, of which Clos de la Roche is rated higher than the Clos Saint Denis the village was named after the latter because it sounded better than Morey La Roche. In the past it suffered from the small size of its vineyard sites, of 20 Premier Crus only 3 are larger than 3 hectares, so there was never enough wine to reach a wider audience. There are many excellent wines produced in Morey and their relative lack of recognition compared with surrounding villages means they can be great value.
