Pegasus Bay

Based in the Waipara Valley (30 minutes north of Christchurch) in New Zealand's South Island, the Pegasus Bay winery is owned by the Donaldson family who have been involved in wine since the early 1970’s and were pioneers of local grape growing and wine making. This is a family-owned and operated enterprise.

The aim here is to grow grapes of the highest quality, which fully express the features of the vineyard. Natural methods and as little intervention as possible at all stages from vine to bottle, typify their approach.

Pegasus Bay believe in sustainable viticulture management, organic techniques, low crop levels, minimal handling of fruit during processing, gentle pressing and slow fermentation.

This is currently one of New Zealand's hottest wineries and their wines are winning plaudits and awards on a regular basis.

Wines from Pegasus Bay

Producer: Pegasus Bay
Wine: Chardonnay 2007
Region: Waipara_Valley Country: New Zealand
Grape: Chardonnay
Tasting notes: On release the aroma and flavour emphasises stone fruit and corn characters supported by hints of bacon and mushrooms grilled on a wood fired barbeque. The wine has gained extra concentration and depth from the naturally low crop. It seems to expand in the mouth and becomes very powerful, but there is a backbone of minerality and acidity which keep it tight knit and refined. It lingers on the palate long after swallowing. It will show further development and integration with careful bottle ageing.

Wine: Sauvignon/Semillon 2008
Region: Waipara_Valley Country: New Zealand
Grape: Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon
Tasting notes: The low crops have helped give this traditional French blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon extra concentration and depth. The bouquet shows the exotic characters of lychee, paw paw and passionfruit, underlain by nuances of gooseberry. These come from the sauvignon. The semillon provides complimentary lemon and lime flavours as well as structure and length on the palate. The wild fermentation has added a racy component of Turkish musk complexity. While ready to drink on release, with careful cellaring, the wine will develop an array of other fascinating characters and the semillon should help it live for 5-10 years of more.

"The 2007 Sauvignon/Semillon is endowed with a vibrant fresh, animated nose so crisp and well-defined. Apple, limestone and a touch of smoke. The palate has a wonderful balance, perfectly-pitched acidity with a crisp, lanolin-tinged finish. This is how Sauvignon should be! Outstanding." 95pts Robert Parker
