The river Dheune runs through the centre of this quadrangle village between Volnay and Beaune. The vineyards slope down the river valley, facing north on the Volnay side and South on the other. On the higher slopes a large expanse of land is given over to village wines while the Premier Crus are produced lower down. The wines of Pommard are characteristically full, fat and concentrated, which is largely due to the combination of a high percentage of limestone and clay in the area.
