Priorat is an isolated appellation in Catalonia in north east Spain. It is one of the most exciting areas of Spain with several small producers making extraordinary wines on its steep terraced slopes and poor stony quartz and slate soils. Most are producing blends using Garnacha and Carinena (Carignan) with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
Tasting notes: Set alongside the great wines, Ermita and Finca Dofí, Les Terrasses is produced under simpler guidelines, easy, relaxed and more diverse in nature, yet, still has a great personality and a good balance of opulence and elegance.Produced from grapes which the winery acquire from small vine-growers in Priorat whom they themselves advise and manage. Les Terrasses spends a year in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new, the remaining 80% being in their second or third year of use.
Tasting notes: 50% Garnacha, 45% Cariñena and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 14 months on lees in American (15%) and French (85%) oak.
Bright red ruby colour. Damson fruit with nutmeg, cinnamon and white pepper nose. A wine of character, medium bodied, dry, concentrated redcurrant and blackcurrant, gooseberry fruit with good acidity and soft leathery tannins. Lingering finish.
Production: Just 30,000 bottles. This is the second wine to Mas d'en Compte.
