Veneto is the most important wine region of north east Italy. It stretches west to Lake Garda and north to the alps. The hills of Valpolicella lie in the foothills of the Lessini Mountains and merge with Soave to the east towards Venice. There is now a strong band of producers who are producing top quality wines in these appellations, far removed from the thin insipid offerings found on the lower reaches of restaurant lists and in the supermarkets. From the shores of Lake Garda there are a few producers making elegant, concentrated Lugana wines.
Tasting notes: The 2007 Soave Classico La Rocca is an impeccable, elegant white laced with delicate perfumed fruit. This mid-weight yet incredibly expressive La Rocca possesses outstanding length and a refined finish. It is another jewel of a wine from Pieropan. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2017.
Pieropan has long been a leader in quality in Soave, but these new releases seem to take things to another level. The 2007 Soaves in particular are gems readers will not want to miss.
Tasting notes: Pieropan are considered one of the best producers in Italy of this stunning grape variety. "This is how soave should taste but seldom does. Plenty of ripe pear-like fruit plus a dash of toasted nut flavours. Crisp and fresh, with a hint of honey in the finish, this is a delightful aperitif wine, as well as a fine choice for pairing with light seafood or vegetarian. It's delicate charm stands out in todays sea of heavy often hot wine." Beautiful classical white wine.
Tasting notes: This Trebbiano/Garganega is very fresh on the nose, with lightly floral notes, especially the characteristic almond blossom perfumes found in the best whites from this area. A blend of 60% Trebbiano and 40% Garganega, it has soft, fresh apple fruit on the palate, with a clean, zesty finish.
