Vougeot

Nearly 80 percent of the Vougeot commune is given over to the famous Clos de Vougeot Crand Cru, a walled vineyard completed in 1336 by Cistercian monks. This 50 ha plot has several different soil structures, varying in quality. The different plots used to be blended into a complete wine, however there are now over 80 owners, many producing sub standard wine, from the less favoured plots. Good Clos de Vougeot is one of the most complex and richest wines of the Cote d’Or. The Premier Crus account for another 17 or so percent of the commune leaving less than 5 ha for the production of village wines.
